👋🏼 Hi, I’m Colin, founder of PeaceFeed. Like many Americans, I found myself increasingly consumed by political news and social media following the 2016 election. What started as an earnest attempt to “stay informed” gradually transformed into an overwhelming flood of political content that began affecting my daily life and mental well-being.
By 2024, I realized something had to change. While staying informed is important, being constantly immersed in political content wasn’t making me a better citizen – it was just making me more stressed and less productive.
The Google News Problem
What frustrated me most was that even major platforms like Google News didn’t provide a way to opt out of political content. Despite offering to hide some sources, there was simply no way to say “I’d like a break from politics.” The algorithms seemed designed to amplify political stories, pushing them to the top of feeds regardless of user preferences.
The Birth of PeaceFeed
That’s when I had an idea: What if we could choose when to engage with political content, rather than having it thrust upon us at every turn? What if we had a tool that allows regular people to stay informed on their own terms?
PeaceFeed was born from this simple concept. I created a browser extension that would let users temporarily blur political content when they needed a break. The goal wasn’t to disconnect completely, but to regain control over when and how we consume political news.
PeaceFeed isn’t about avoiding reality or creating an echo chamber. Instead, we believe in:
• Empowering users to control their online experience
• Supporting mental well-being through mindful news consumption
• Providing tools for balanced engagement with current events
A Personal Note
Not everyone is built for constant political engagement – hell, I am one of those people - and that’s okay. Some folks are naturally suited for full-time advocacy and political involvement. Others need to engage differently, finding their own balance between staying informed and maintaining their mental health.
PeaceFeed is for those seeking that balance. It’s for people who want to stay connected to current events without letting them dominate their daily lives. It’s for anyone who’s ever felt overwhelmed by the 24/7 news cycle and thought, “I need a break.”
I recognize that the ability to take breaks from political content is a privilege. For many, staying constantly informed isn’t a choice – it’s a necessity, as political decisions directly impact their lives, families, and communities.
